Maiden England

Well, ladies and gentlemen, the new tour has started!

Congrats everyone!

The set list provided a couple of surprises. One is absence of Hallowed Be My Name. Pretty disappointing.... But the fact that it has Afraid To Shoot Strangers is totally awesome and makes it up for me 100%! I absolutely adore this song, but I never expected to hear it live, since 90s songs are not among the first choice for the set. But it is there! Amazing! I'm chuffed to bits :D

The whole setlist is:
  1. MOONCHILD
  2. CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS
  3. THE PRISONER
  4. 2 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT
  5. AFRAID TO SHOOT STRANGERS
  6. THE TROOPER
  7. THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
  8. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
  9. RUN TO THE HILLS
  10. WASTED YEARS
  11. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON>
  12. >THE CLAIRVOYANT
  13. FEAR OF THE DARK
  14. IRON MAIDEN
  15. ACES HIGH
  16. THE EVIL THAT MEN DO
  17. RUNNING FREE

Quite a nice one, even though there's just 3 'new' songs compared to several last tours.

But the greatest thing is.... I'm going to see them live very soon! Leaving for the states tomorrow! Excited as hell!

And the first pro pic of Jan from the first gig in Charlotte.

Blood Brothers

Today I was listening/watching several different versions of Blood Brothers. And Janick does play that favourite bit of ours slightly different almost each time. He accentuates different notes at different gigs - sometimes he picks the string, sometimes he just uses hammer-ons and pull-offs. And the last part of the solo is played differently as well. These days he never plays it as it is on the album, but prefers to play just one long note (like Davey in NotB), or sometimes three bends and a shorter note. While on BNW tour it was closer to the album version.

Anyway, I love these little improvisations!

Jan's white Strat.

A little article where Janick talks about one of his guitars. A great read!

'I'm honestly not like that anymore' (c) Jan. Ha! I wish I could see him 'going mad like in the good old day'

I think it's this guitar, the one he uses for Iron Maiden to this day. Love the caption! :D

Something new.

Haven't had much time to draw recently, but still managed to create a new pic of Jan :)

Something that isn't really me...

A lovely extract from an interview with Jan from an old FC mag.

You can really see that, can't you?

En Vivo, first listen.

So, this morning I finally got to listen En Vivo. The first impression - god, it's great! :D I've listened to the bootleg from Moscow gig quite a lot so that all the songs are firmly embedded in my memory, besides, it was my first IM tour, so I was really looking forward to it. And it didn't disappoint. Talisman is just magnificent! The acoustic guitar sound more 'real' that on the album version, which adds to the feel of the sea shanty beginning. Loved all the little improvisations during Running Free - I never paid attention to them during live gigs :) Jan's solo in Danth of Death was another improvisation, but quite a good one this time, unlike in Death on the Road. And the Blood Brothers solo... It's the same as always, which means, it's perfect :D Bruce's manner of singing is great!

One negative moment though - during When The Wild Wind Blows the guitar channels appeared to be reversed, so that Jan's guitar was coming from the left earphone. Confused the hell out of me! :D Dunno, maybe it's just the dodgy mp3 I downloaded, 'coz I don't wanna wait for half a month or more 'til I be able to get the real thing. Hope it is just mp3s and not the mistake in the mixing, 'coz it really sounds wrong this way...

But it was great to listen it before watching. I know, that when I'll be watching it, I won't pay attention to the subtleties of the music - all my attention would be focused on the visual side, as usual. To be more precise, on him:

Paul & Blaze.

A couple of weeks ago there was a joint gig of 2 former Maiden singers, Paul DiAnno and Blaze. After thinking twice and more times about that, 'coz really, now both of them are far from being on top of the shape, I finally decided to go :) No Janick there, of course, but I knew I'd here some Maiden songs :)

A few day before the gig I also found out there was a press conference and an autograph session in one of the clubs, and it being Sunday, I decided to go there as well. Traffic wasn't as light as I hoped, so I got there a bit late for most of the interviews, but still got a pic with both of the guy :) Don't really know what for, 'coz I'm not a celebrity hunter or anything. When after taking the pics and getting a few things signed I sat at a table to put everything away, one guy on the next table said he knew me from the FC forum :) And yet he never spoke to me there :) Well, not many Russians do.

The tickets for the gig said the start was at 4 pm, which surprised me a bit, but I was quite glad I'd be home early, 'coz the next day I had to get up early for work. Well, there were 4 local opening bands :D The first one played a couple of Maiden covers, along with other covers and their own stuff. The bassist kid seemed to be copying Steve shamelessly, though he was much more shy and didn't make any eye contact with the audience. The second band was a bit more original, and the guitarist had Steve's wristband. Now, I also was wearing Steve's wristband, the one I caught in St.Pete, just for the hell of it. He noticed it and got really excited, so much, that at the end of their set he went down from the stage, still playing his guitar, came up to me through all the crowd and put his wristband near mine (mine conveniently was on the left hand, while his on the right :)) Damn, that was funny! The third band had quite an interesting singer and a violin. The forth band simply sucked, so I even went out of the main room not to torture my senses :D

Then was Blaze's turn. And he sang quite good! If I'm honest, I never liked him much - thought he was good on the albums, but totally sucked live. Well, I didn't notice any problems with pitch or anything. Bit his stage presence still sucks :D
He made a too big deal of how much he was thankful to the fans who bought the tickets and cds, making it possible for him to come here. Also, it was a really small club, with no barrier in front of the quite low stage, and I was standing kinda too close to it :) Blaze came right up to the edge of it, and I didn't like the fact that his crotch was right on level with my eyes and less than a meter away :D Well, anyway, the set included 5 Maiden songs, including my fave Clansman, and it was great hearing it live, even though my fave Jan solo was completely messed up by the guitarist :D

After that Paul came on stage. Gawd, this man's a wreck! I read some reviews of the other gigs in Russia, so I knew that there's something wrong with his leg, so he hardly moves, but he still sang great. Well, not the case in Moscow. He seemed to have caught a cold (at least that's what he said), so his voice were far from good. For which he apologized several times during the gig ("my voice is shit but at least the music is good" - speaking about Maiden songs :)). But even with all that he still had a certain charisma on stage (which Blaze doesn't have at all, IMO). And you could see that it was very difficult for him to be there - he sweated like a pig, coughed a lot in between singing and grasped for air, and was holding on to the mic stand so he wouldn't fall. And yet he still sang, and joked. Gotta respect that, I think! The set was shortened in comparison with other gigs though, and after the last song he just limped backstage, not sure if he even said goodbye. But once again, singing along to The Prowler, Murders in the Rue Morgue and other classics was awesome!

Anyway, not a bad way to spend a Sunday!

He just makes people smile.

Today on the way to work in the underground train I was watching a Maiden gig on iPad, as usual. This time it was a couple of songs from Roskilde 1991, when everyone had loads of energy and Jan was just like a whirlwind on stage. Now, the iPad has a very reflective screen and I can always see people who look over my shoulder to see what's there. Some just throw a quick glance, some stare for quite a long time. Well, this time I saw a guy who started smiling very broadly when Janick started acting just a bit over the top :) Of course, I'm always smiling as well when I see Jan, so it's nice to know that not only my mood was improved by this awesome guitarist this cold morning, but someone else's as well :)

And one highlight about the gig: Jan span his guitar counterclockwise there! While usually he does it over his right shoulder. Quite unusual :D

That is some editing :)

After doing that research about Jan's stage clothes, I watched a bit of Flight 666, just first few songs. And what did I notice? That during some songs his jeans switch from being cut at the sides to being uncut! Well, usual thing with official DVDs I suppose :D But during Can I Play With Madness on the same DVD I noticed shots of Jan using 3 different guitars :D Surely no need to edit it that heavily?! :) Oh well, still a great watch! And notice such stuff is actually quite interesting. Wonder, how many such inconsistencies will be on the new DVD? :D

It's been a year!

Exactly a year ago I went to an Iron Maiden gig, just for the hell of it, 'coz I and nothing better to do... And it completely changed my life :D Certainly for the better! I've known Maiden for about 10 years before that, and listened to a few songs from the 80s occasionally, but never was a fan and didn't know anything about the band. But after seeing them live I became a fan instantly. But what really converted me momentarily was seeing Janick! As I wrote in my intro, watching him play just makes me smile - and that's awesome! On the way from the gig I couldn't shut up about that amazing blonde guitarist all the way home, speaking with my mum, who hasn't been to the gig, but came over to pick me up in the car (with a nice cup of hot coffee, which in -20 degrees C was as awesome as the gig had been :D).

I still remember my first reaction on seeing Jan. I sat quite far away (only true fans go to the floor and I wasn't a fan back then), and my eyesight is faaaaar from good, so when I first saw him dancing and jumping, and doing a windmill with his hand and wearing those skinny jeans and big white hightops...I thought he couldn't be more than 25, and that he was a newcomer to the band (well, relatively speaking, he is :D)... and that he just teleported straight from the 80s :D Then, when I looked at him through my binoculars (if I go to the seats, I go prepared!), and thought that ok, he may be closer to 40. Then upon seeing him on the big screens to the sides of the stage I realised how wrong I had been :D But I already was hooked, from the first seconds of seeing him, and I watched mostly Jan the whole gig.... as I still do on every dvd and bootleg I watch :D But of course, it wasn't only Janick, the music just blew me away too! The newer Maiden music, while before the gig I heard only the stuff from the 80s. 3 songs that impressed me most of all were Dance of Death, When The Wild Wind Blows and The Talisman - those wonderful epics Maiden are so good at. Interesting that 2 of those songs were written by Jan, even though I didn't know that at that time :) Well, my mind just turned into the right direction straight away!

When in the end of the gig Bruce said "See you in St.Petersburg this summer" I immediately decided to go - I was already a fan! So, bought a ticket to St.Pete gig, joined the Fan Club, saw just how much people travel for Maiden (seeing Lisa's 2011 tour in her signature was the determining point!) and decided to try and go to the Helsinki gig as well, though before it just seemed waaaaay too difficult to do that - with all the booking, visas and tickets, and not knowing the local language, and having no one to go with. But I decided to give it a go anyway, and turned out it was easy! I found some nice company with the help of the FC and had a really great time at my first gig abroad. And in St.Petersburg.... I met Janick, though briefly but completely by accident, which made it twice as awesome, and watched the gig from the barrier for the first time... and there's nothing like that!

One year later.... it's still the same! Watching and listening Janick and Maiden has the same effect on me as a year ago. And I'm soooo looking forward to the new tour and doing as many gigs as possible!

So anyway, to commemorate this glorious anniversary, a pic of Jan.... as usual :D even though I have fuckall time for drawing nowadays :D

Jan's tour shirts.

After watching that gig mentioned in the previous post, I decided to do some more researching (a good excuse for looking at hundreds of pics of Jan, eh ;)), this time about his stage clothes. It doesn't seem to change much over the years since the beginning of 90s, aside from a different tour shirt, but what shirt exactly? Well, turned out that only on the last 4 tours Janick has been wearing just one tour shirt per year, while before there were more variants of his stage attire. But overall Jan looked the same on stage for the past 20 years. I love that! Lemmy is the same, so's Slash. And that's awesome!

Anyway, lets start with time before Maiden!

His first band was White Spirit, and Janick could be seen on stage wearing not so skinny trousers and what seemed like a black silk shirt with really wide sleeves. If not for his flamboyant style of playing, it would've been impossible to recognise him!

During his Gillan days Jan wore white/red shirts, jackets and jeans and still those white high-heeled boots (like Lemmy and a lot of other metalheads at that time), and a bullet belt. And occasionally one leg warmer! Not sure what he was thinking at that time, 'coz honestly, it looked quite ridiculous :D

Then came a call from Bruce to record an album and go on a small tour to support it. And that's when the unmistakable Jan's stage style was first seen, and hasn't changed much since. Tight jeans (either black or light blue), with a hole on one knee, tour shirt with cut off sleeves and leather or denim jacket in the beginning of the gig. And at first he had converse shoes, which he switched to his usual reeboks a couple of years later.

When he joined Maiden, it stayed exactly the same. Though during the first few warm up gigs it was a yellow singlet instead of a tour shirt :) And the denim jacket appeared a few times as well. Light coloured tight jeans also gave way to black ones quite soon.

During his first tour with Maiden he wore 2 shirts, as far as I can tell:
- No prayer for the dying artwork
- Tailgunner shirt, with a really cool looking back :D
- He also got those High top Reeboks, which he first wore with straps below the tongue.

Back - really cool stuff :D

Fear of the Dark tour and the later tours with Bruce saw 3 more shirts:

During the Blaze era, he wore 2 tour shirts for each of the albums as well as a simple black sleeveless top. Also his usual white runners were sometimes replaced by similar black ones, though there's not much documented evidence of that.

During Ed Hunter tour Jan wore.... an Ed Hunter tour shirt :)

Now, Brave New World tour saw the most awesome trousers imaginable - black and white spots, a hole on one knee and torn at the bottom of the /legs/. Dunno where Jan came by those (probably home made stuff?) and what made him decide to wear those, but it looked fantastic! Besides there were 4 different shirts that year, all black and white ones to go with the jeans, though the one he wore on Rock In Rio DVD is certainly the most common one. But there was also one with just horizontal white stripes, one with an Iron Maiden logo and one with some splashes of white and laces on the sides! Now, that's sexy :D

During 2003 tour Jan wore the same stuff he already had during previous tours. Sometimes same B&W shirt and even trousers that he had for the most of BNW tour, but more often greyish jeans with another hole on the knee and studs on the seams and the same t-shirt he had for Real Live Tour 10 years ago :) And for North America dates he had a special shirt promoting another Best Of album.

Back

For Dance of Death tour Janick naturally had Dance of Death tour shirt, but not only :) There was also another shirt with random splashes of colour (he really seems to like those!), which at first even had sleeves on, though later in the tour they got cut off as usual. He also set his choice on black tight jeans torn at the bottom with hole on one knee and studs running down the seams, which stayed his main trousers for years to come.

Back

2005 tour was a classic albums tour, and so Jan wore 2 classic t-shirts, Killers and Piece of mind, one of which didn't even have a print on the back. Though there was another shirt with sleeves still on, with random pattern on it and without a Maiden logo, which, judging by number of pics, was worn to just a few gigs.

During AMOLAD tour Jan had an unusually large number of shirts - 4, and even different jeans, which he switched if he had 2 gigs in the row, as can be seen on 2 bootlegs from Milan shot on 2 consecutive nights. While the first gig features Jan in the usual AMOLAD shirt and his fave jeans, during the second gig he wore another shirt with some splashes of colour (I think it may be the same one he wore during DoD tour, just faded) and jeans which looked like they were bleached a bit and like they had a camouflage pattern. But still torn at the bottom and with a usual hole on right knee. And what's even more incredible, is that for the encore of that second night in Milan he changed his shirt for a camo one with Eddie with crossed guns in the front! Never saw him doing that anywhere :) And now he doesn't seem to bother with changing his shirt from gig to gig, even on consecutive nights :) And judging by the pics there was even one more shirt, with Crossed guns Eddie on the back.

Back

For 2007 tour it was a new shirt with the same AMOLAD artwork on the front, but different tour dates on the back. Also for a few gigs poor Jan had to wear a brace on one leg, after some bastard damaged his knee and after which he never sits on it anymore. And hence during latter tours his jeans never have a hole on the knee I guess :)

Back

The latter tours Janick was wearing just one shirt per year... or maybe just several identical ones, though I doubt it for some reason, especially during the last tour - you just have to look at the state of that shirt by the end of the tour as compared with what it looked like during the first gig :D

For 2008 it was an Aces High shirt all the way, though there still were some changed in his attire - for the first few dates of that tour he had his jeans torn at the bottom, as it was usual for the past decade, but then, sometime during or after the Australian dates, the jeans weren't torn anymore for some reason. Why? No idea :D

New jeans. Same yet new.

Back

2009 - The Trooper shirt.

Back

2010 - The Final Frontier Big Teeth shirt (which my mum insist looks as if he's wearing a bra.... Well, there is something to that, I must admit :D). And his jeans instead of being on top of the shoes became tucked inside the hi-tops :) Why? Who knows :D

Back

Attention to the shoes :)

2011 - The Final Frontier album artwork shirt.

Back

And the way it was during the last gig of the tour :D

And just random fact: that bit of black cloth that could be seen in the hole in his jeans is just a knee pad. I even think he still wears on the right knee.
